A sleep tracker won't fix your sleep. It isn't built to. What it's built to do is show you the parts of the night you have no access to any other way — and once that's clear, most of the argument about whether these devices are worth wearing collapses.
People tend to split into two camps on sleep trackers: true believers chasing a perfect score, and skeptics who've decided the whole category is theatre with a heart-rate sensor. Both are arguing about the wrong thing.
You can't feel your own sleep stages
Nobody wakes up with an accurate memory of their night. You don't know how long you spent in deep sleep, how many times you surfaced without noticing, or whether last night's restlessness was thirty minutes or three hours. That gap — between what happened and what you can recall — is the actual product being sold here, whatever the marketing says about optimisation.
Wrist and finger wearables are the obvious starting point for most people testing this out, mostly because they ask so little of you: put one on, forget about it, and check a number in the morning. Whether that number is worth trusting is a separate question — and one with a more interesting answer than the category's reputation suggests.
Some of them are genuinely accurate
This is where it gets more interesting than "wellness gadget, buy with caution." A five-night study running Apple Watch, Oura, Whoop, Fitbit, and Garmin against polysomnography — the in-lab, wired-to-your-scalp gold standard — found real, specific differences. Oura and Whoop's newer algorithm led on sleep-stage accuracy. Apple Watch, oddly, was the standout for something simpler but harder: knowing when you were actually awake. Garmin and Fitbit weren't far behind either. Separate 2026 testing put the Oura Ring 4 ahead specifically on four-stage classification and catching deep sleep, while a University of Antwerp study found Garmin reliably caught sleep episodes but struggled more with the wake/sleep boundary.
Then there's the category above all of this: EEG headbands like the Muse S Athena, which pair actual brainwave sensing with a form of brain-blood-flow imaging and land in the high 80s to mid-90s percent accuracy against polysomnography. That's the closest a consumer device gets to a lab. It's also worth noticing what a device is claiming about itself when it costs several times what a ring does — that price tag is doing brand work too, quietly asking you to treat it as closer to a medical instrument than a gadget, whether or not you actually want to sleep with a headband on.
Read it as a rough trend across weeks, not a nightly verdict. Remember it's a consumer device, not a diagnostic one.
The obsession isn't the tracker's fault, but it's real
I don't own one, and the honest reason is that I know exactly what I'd do with it. Give me a nightly number and I'll optimise for the number, not for how I actually feel — that's not a hypothetical, it's just self-knowledge, and it happens to be a documented failure mode rather than a personal quirk. Researchers at Rush University Medical Center coined a term for it — orthosomnia — the specific, well-documented pattern of becoming fixated on a "perfect" sleep score. It's a genuinely ironic loop: someone starts tracking sleep to ease anxiety about it, and ends up anxious about the number instead, which can make the sleep itself worse.
Sleep specialists are fairly unanimous on the fix, and it isn't "stop tracking" — it's changing what you're using the tracker for. Read it as a rough trend across weeks, not a nightly verdict. Remember it's a consumer device, not a diagnostic one. And if it flags something that looks like a real breathing issue, that's a reason to get an actual sleep study, not a reason to start self-diagnosing from an app.
If you actually want to improve your sleep, change your behaviour first. A tracker won't fix a bedtime that drifts by three hours every weekend, and it won't undo the coffee at four in the afternoon — deal with those, and most of what a tracker would show you starts improving before you've looked at a single chart. Once that's sorted, using one is worth doing, but not for the nightly grade. The only metric that actually matters is how you feel when you wake up, and no device on the market measures that directly — they measure things correlated with it, which is a narrower and more honest promise than most of the marketing lets on. If you do want to track anyway, Oura Ring 4 and the Muse S Athena headband are, by the current evidence, the most accurate options — the ring if you want to forget you're wearing it, the headband if you want something closer to an actual lab reading and don't mind sleeping in gear.
None of that makes the hardware any less real, or the research behind it any less serious. It just means the engineering was always going to be the easy part — the harder one is knowing yourself well enough to use the number, or well enough to leave it in the box.
